Tale of Nigerian Woman Explored in Sojourners, Previewing Off-Broadway Today

News   Tale of Nigerian Woman Explored in Sojourners, Previewing Off-Broadway Today Playwrights Realm stages the world premiere of Mfoniso Udofia Sojourners, about a Nigerian woman's life-changing journey to the U.S., with previews starting Jan. 21.

The Off-Broadway production is helmed by Ed Sylvanus Iskandar, with the official opening set for Jan. 28 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater and a run scheduled through Feb. 13.

"Abasiama came to America with high hopes — for her arranged marriage and for her future — intent on earning a degree and returning to Nigeria," state production notes. "But when her husband is seduced by America, she must choose between the Nigerian and the American dream."

The cast includes Hubert Point-Du Jour, Lakisha Michelle May, Chinasa Ogbuagu and Chinaza Uche.

The design team includes Jason Sherwood (scenic design), Jiyoun Chang (lighting design), Loren Shaw (costume design), Jeremy S. Bloom (sound design), Stefano Brancato (puppet design/direction) and Samantha Shoffner (props design). Kara Kaufman is the production stage manager and Ed Herman is the assistant stage manager.

Sojourners is part of The Playwrights Realm’s Page One Program, which supports early-career playwrights and has awarded Udofia with a one-year residency.
