Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner penned book and lyrics to Caroline, which has a score by Jeanine Tesori (Shrek, Thoroughly Modern Millie). Both received Tony Award nominations for their work. Caroline, or Change was also nominated for Best Musical.

The Dayton, OH, theatre company will produce Caroline, or Change Nov. 3-20. Scott Stoney will direct the musical, set in 1963 St. Charles, LA, at the dawn of the Civil Rights movement.

In addition to Gary as Caroline, the cast will include Yvette Williams as her daughter Emmie, as well as Malachi-Phree J. Pate and J. Miguel Conrado Rojas, who play her sons. Bruce Sabath (Broadway's Company) will play Stuart Gellman, with Brendan Plate as Noah Gellman, the young boy who develops a relationship with Caroline. 

Also featured are Adrienne Gibbons Oehlers as Rose Stopnick Gellman, Brittany Campbell as the Washing Machine, Dwelvan David as the Dryer/the Bus, Tonya Thompson as the Moon, and Ashanti J'Aria, Kimberly Shay Hamby and Shawn Storms the Radio. Kay Bosse, Saul Caplan and K.L. Storer complete the cast as the grandparents.

Caroline, or Change has musical direction by Scot Woolley, choreography by Teressa Wylie, scenic design by Dan Gray, lighting design by John Rensel, costume design by Kristine Kearney and sound design by Nathan D. Dean.

According to the Human Race, "It's 1963. Martin Luther King has just told the world of his dream. John F. Kennedy is about to be assassinated. And in the basement of a Jewish family's home in Louisiana, their African-American maid spends her days doing laundry and being the only friend of a boy who has lost his mother."
