Classic Stage Company celebrates the opening of Terrence McNally’s Fire and Air February 1. The ballet drama explores the rich history behind Sergei Diaghilev’s preeminent company the Ballet Russes, including his tempestuous relationship with celebrated dancer Vaslav Nijinsky.

Tony-winning Artistic Director John Doyle directs the world-premiere production Off-Broadway. Leading the cast as Diaghilev is Tony winner Douglas Hodge (Cyrano de Bergerac) alongside James Cusati-Moyer (Six Degrees of Separation) as Nijinsky.

Completing the company are Tony nominee Marin Mazzie (Ragtime, The King and I) as Misia, John Glover (The Cherry Orchard) as Dima, Jay Armstrong Johnson (On the Town) as Massine, and Oscar nominee Marsha Mason (The Goodbye Girl) as Dunya.

Fire and Air began performances January 17 and is scheduled to run through February 25.

The CSC staging features scenic design by Doyle, costumes by Ann Hould-Ward, lighting design by Jane Cox, sound design by Matt Stine, and hair and make-up by J. Jared Janas.

McNally is a four-time Tony-winning playwright and musical book writer; his works include Anastasia, Love! Valour! Compassion!, Master Class, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Ragtime.
