At Sunday's MTV Music Video Awards the punk rock group Green Day won three moon men statuettes - for Best Rock Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography - for their song "21 Guns," the current single off their new CD "21st Century Breakdown."

So what's the theatre connection? The stage adaptation of Green Day's first rock opera, American Idiot, is currently receiving its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and the show, which contains all of the songs from the band's 2004 eponymous blockbuster album, also interpolates a handful of songs from "21st Century Breakdown," including the song "21 Guns."

American Idiot, directed by Tony winner Michael Mayer and starring John Gallagher Jr., opens Sept. 16.
