The nomination marks the first time a performance from a Broadway musical is up for the award.

The Today Show performance from the cast of The Color Purple is up for a 2017 Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Award in the Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program category. In the nominated performance, Tony winner Cynthia Erivo led the cast in the title number on May 3, just moments after the Tony nominations were announced.

The category was added for the 2016 Daytime Emmy Awards; this marks the first time a performance from a Broadway musical is among the nominees. Also up for the award are Pentatonix on Rachael Ray, Michael Bublé on LIVE with Kelly, and both Charles Bradley and St. Paul and the Broken Bones on CBS This Morning Saturday.

Neither Erivo nor the revival itself are considered official nominees in the category; the award is instead presented to the program that hosts the performance—in this instance, The Today Show.

The revival played its final performance at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre January 8. In addition to a win for Erivo, the production received the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical; it also earned nominations for Danielle Brooks (who played Sofia) and director John Doyle.
