Edward Torres will direct the new work scheduled to begin previews April 27 and officially open May 20. The run will play through June 20 at the company's Off-Broadway home. The play centers on "Macedonio 'The Mace' Guerra [who] is a middle rank pro-wrestler who may have discovered his ticket to the big time: a charismatic, trash-talking Indian kid from Brooklyn whom he recruits as the perfect foil to the All-American champion, Chad Deity," according to the announcement. "But when their rivalry is used to exploit racial stereotypes in the name of ratings, all three men find themselves fighting for much more than the championship title."

The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity had its world premiere at Chicago's Victory Gardens Theater, in association with Teatro Vista, in fall 2009. Casting and the design team for the Off-Broadway production will be announced at a later date.

Director Torres staged the Chicago debut of the play by Diaz. Other works by the playwright include Welcome to Arroyo's and Guernica.

Second Stage recently ended its extended run of Anna Deavere Smith's Let Me Down Easy. The company will next present John Lithgow and Jennifer Ehle in the world premiere of Douglas Carter Beane's Mr. & Mrs. Fitch (Jan. 26-April 4). Closing out the season, following The Elaborate Entrance, will be Paul Weitz's Trust (summer 2010).

Tickets to The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity at Second Stage Theatre, 305 West 43rd Street (off Eighth Avenue), are available by calling (212) 246-4422. For more information, visit 2ST.com.
