News The Five Lesbian Brothers Rework Sophocles in Oedipus at Palm Springs; Starts Off-Broadway, July 20 The Five Lesbian Brothers return to the stage when New York Theatre Workshop presents the company's new work, Oedipus at Palm Springs, starting July 20.

Leigh Silverman (Well) directs the new work slated to open Aug. 3 and run at the downtown theatre through Aug. 28.

Created and performed by The Five Lesbian Brothers (comprised of writer-performers Maureen Angelos, Babs Davy, Dominique Dibbell, Peg Healey, and Lisa Kron, Oedipus at Palm Springs is billed as "a sexy new take on a crusty old play." According to show materials the new version "examines the real-life work of trying to love another person through the story of two long-term couples on a weekend trip to the desert paradise. When the Brothers magically mix the fun-loving surface of tanning, mixed drinks, golf, and sport utility vehicles with a messy infrastructure of commitment, marriage, passion, and motherhood they serve up a comedy so brave it will leave you not only shaken but stirred."

The Five Lesbian Brothers previously produced their Brides of the Moon (1997) and The Secretaries (1994) at New York Theatre Workshop. The troupe came together as a theatre company in 1989 having performed together in various other combinations at the Obie Award-winning WOW Cafe Theatre. Among their other works include the plays Voyage to Lesbos and Brave Smiles, a book of lesbian humor "The Five Lesbian Brother's Guide to Life: A Collection of Helpful Hints and Fabricated Facts for Today's Gay Girl," and three short films for HBO.

Director Silverman most recently staged the world premiere of Well by Lisa Kron at Off-Broadway's Public Theater and the run at San Francisco's A.C.T. Other directing credits include the recent revival of John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea (Second Stage Theater), Finder's Fee (Rattlestick Theater), Bad Dates (Cleveland Playhouse), Wit (London's West End and Los Angeles' Geffen Theatre) and the world premiere of Neena Beber's Jump/Cut (Washington, D.C.'s Woolly Mammoth Theatre).

The design team for Oedipus at Palm Springs features David Korins (scenic), Miranda Hoffman (costume), Mary Louise Geiger (lighting) and John Gromada (sound). Martha Donaldson serves as the production stage manager.
