The Broadway musical with a book by Terrence McNally (Master Class, Love! Valour! Compassion!) and music and lyrics by rock composer David Yazbek was based on the 1997 film of the same title. The stagework, however, resets the piece from Sheffield, England to Buffalo, New York and adds a few characters but remains sincere to the story of average Joes who become strippers to raise money. The musical comedy was directed by Jack O'Brien.

Yazbek's score includes "Scrap," "Man," "Big Ass Rock," "Big Black Man," 'Life With Harold," "You Rule My World," "Michael Jordan's Ball," "Breeze Off the River," "The Goods," "You Walk With Me" and "Let It Go." Before opening at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre Oct. 26, 2000, The Full Monty began life at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre setting an Old Globe box office record. The show received ten Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Director, but was overshadowed by the top-Tony record-breaking The Producers.
