On July 20, the TV film — starring Emmy Award winner Patricia Heaton as Paula McFadden and stage and film actor Jeff Daniels as Elliott Garfield — will arrive in video stores. The production debuted on the TNT Network in January.
Neil Simon wrote the screenplay for this contemporary turn on his classic film about a divorcee and an aspiring actor who become unwilling roommates. The cast also includes Hallie Kate Eisenberg as Paula's daughter Lucy and Tony Award winner Alan Cumming as an Off-Broadway director. Richard Benjamin directed.
Richard Dreyfuss and Marsha Mason starred in the original 1977 film. Both Mason and Dreyfuss were nominated for Academy Awards for their work; Dreyfuss took home the Oscar. Bernadette Peters and Martin Short played the lead roles in the 1993 Broadway musical, which featured a score by Marvin Hamlisch and David Zippel. Peters and Short were Tony nominated for their performances.
Grammy Award-winners Hootie and the Blowfish recorded a remake of David Gates' 1978 single "Goodbye Girl," which is heard in the film.
The DVD, according to a spokesperson, will not have any bonus features.
