News The Great American Trailer Park Pageant Hosted by Jerry Springer Nov. 17 Trailer trash reigns supreme as Jerry Springer hosts The Great American Trailer Park Pageant for the new Off-Broadway musical Nov. 17.

The event to take place starting at 4 PM at the home of the David Nehls-Betsy Kelso work, Dodger Stages, will benefit Broadway Cares/ Equity Fights AIDS. Admission to the pageant is free with a suggested donation of $10 for the charity.

Celebrity judges Crystal Hunt ("Guiding Light"), singer Freddie Jackson, "Village Voice" columnist Michael Musto, The Naked Cowboy and author Bruce Littlefield ("Airstream Living") and the cast of the musical will be on hand for the festivities.

The contestants, according to a release, include:

  • The Glamazons – a three-piece singing group of trashy "big girls"
  • Ben Curtis – the "Dude, You're Getting a Dell" guy – he'll sing and play guitar!
  • Godiva Sue – she stands on her head and burps the alphabet!
  • "The World’s Tallest Country Singer" – he's 6'8" – the next Tiny Tim?
  • Allison Kelly – she can build a nativity scene entirely out of lotto stubs, cigarette boxes and beer cans in under 2 minutes flat!
  • Beverly Hills – a ventriloquist from Vegas - she'll sing "Me and My Shadow" with her dummy
  • A "Skate Dancer" named Lindi May – she can "French Braid her hair while doing a split!"
  • Mimi and Cordelia – singing lesbian trailer trash twins!
  • Ima Boozer – pregnant hula-hooper! Each contestant will have one and a half minutes to perform their unique skill. Based on the talents and outfits, a winner will be crowned at 7:45 PM and become the official spokesperson for the show at future regional productions and be included in a special advertising campaign. The prize list also includes "cases of Pabst Beer, dinner at Spanky's BBQ, a year's supply of Moonpies, a year's supply of Dean's Beans coffee, talking trailer trash dolls, and many more."

    The country-rock and blues musical, which began previews Aug. 20 and opened Sept. 22, is billed as "a new show about agoraphobia, adultery, '80s nostalgia, spray cheese, road kill, hysterical pregnancy, a broken electric chair, kleptomania, strippers, flan & disco." The show hit its 100th performance Off-Broadway Nov. 15. The cast of The Great American Trailer Park Musical features Tony Award winner Shuler Hensley (Oklahoma, "Van Helsing"), Linda Hart (Hairspray, Anything Goes), Kaitlin Hopkins (Bat Boy, Noises Off, Bare), Orfeh (Footloose, Saturday Night Fever), Leslie Kritzer (Hairspray, Bat Boy), Wayne Wilcox (A Man of No Importance, The Light in the Piazza) and original NYMF cast member Marya Grandy.
