The New York premiere of Lauren Yee's play The Great Leap has been extended an additional week at Atlantic Theater Company this spring. The Off-Broadway production, which begins previews May 23, will now continue through June 24.
Is God Is director Taibi Magar directs a previously announced cast made up of Ali Ahn (The Path, The Heidi Chronicles), Ned Eisenberg (Six Degrees of Separation), Tony Aidan Vo (NoNo Boy), and Tony and Emmy Award nominee BD Wong (Mr. Robot, Law & Order: SVU, M. Butterfly).
Inspired by events from her father’s life and (short-lived) basketball career, Yee's The Great Leap weaves a tale of history and personal identity. Set in San Francisco in 1989, the play follows Manford Lum, a basketball player who talks his way onto a college team just before they travel to Beijing for a “friendship” game. When they arrive, China is in the throes of the post-Cultural Revolution era, and Manford must juggle international politics and his own personal history.
The Great Leap will officially open June 4 in Atlantic Theater Company’s Stage 2. Performances were previously scheduled through June 17.
