News The Lion King Plays Its 8,000th Broadway Performance Jan. 21 It’s one of two Broadway hits reaching milestones this month.

Two long-running Broadway productions will pass milestones this month.

The Disney musical The Lion King, which recently celebrated its 19th anniversary on Broadway, will play its 8,000th performance at the January 21 matinee. It's the third-longest-running show in Broadway history.

Based on the Disney animated film of the same title, The Lion King, which opened November 13, 1997, surpassed the original run of that other feline-themed musical, Cats, in 2015 to become Broadway's third-longest-running show. The Lion King, which opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre, is currently playing at the Minskoff Theatre in Times Square.

The Phantom of the Opera, which recently notched its 12,000th performance and stands as the longest-running show of any kind in Broadway history, will celebrate its 29th anniversary at the Majestic Theatre January 26.

The revival of Chicago, which celebrated its 20th anniversary November 14, 2016, is the second-longest-running show in Broadway history.
