Liz Flahive's play, featuring Tony Award nominee and Emmy Award winner Edie Falco as a teacher and mom, began Feb. 5 at Manhattan Theatre Club's Off-Broadway home at City Center Stage I.

Composer Tom Kitt, who won the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for Next to Normal, wrote original music for The Madrid.

Leigh Silverman (Chinglish, From Up Here) directs the play about motherhood, responsibility and family, which also features Seth Clayton, Brooke Ashley Laine, Tony nominee John Ellison Conlee (The Full Monty, Murder Ballad), Drama Desk Award winner Heidi Schreck (Circle Mirror Transformation), Phoebe Strole (Spring Awakening) and two-time Tony Award winner Frances Sternhagen (The Heiress).

Opening night is Feb. 26 for a limited engagement to April 21.

According to MTC, "Falco stars as Martha, a kindergarten teacher with a life many would want: a loving husband (Conlee), a devoted daughter (Strole). But when she leaves it all behind, it's up to her daughter Sarah to pick up the pieces. Two-time Obie winner, Leigh Silverman directs this hilarious and heartbreaking story about motherhood, freedom, and trying to see the people in your family as they really are." Falco is a four-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee ("Nurse Jackie," The House of Blue Leaves, Side Man, "The Sopranos").

Playwright Flahive writes for "Nurse Jackie" and penned Off-Broadway's From Up Here, which received the John Gassner Playwriting Award from the Outer Critics Circle. She is a graduate of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Department of Dramatic Writing.

The creative team also includes David Zinn (scenic design), Emily Rebholtz (costume design), Jeff Croiter (lighting design) and Jill BC Du Boff (sound design).

The Madrid was commissioned through the Bank of America New American Play Program.
