The New York Pops’ 35th Birthday Gala will honor Tony and Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken April 30, 2018, in the Stern Auditorium/Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall.
The 7 PM concert will feature Menken compositions performed by The New York Pops under the music direction of Steven Reineke. A starry line-up of guest artists will be announced at a later time.
Menken wrote the scores to such works as Little Shop of Horrors, The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Newsies, and Broadway's current A Bronx Tale.
Proceeds from the Gala will support the organization’s PopsEd music education programs. The concert will be followed by a black-tie dinner and dance at the Mandarin Oriental New York.
The New York Pops’ 35th anniversary season also includes Women of Notes: In Dedication to Female Composers and Lyricists (November 17) with Adam Kantor and Betsy Wolfe; The Most Wonderful Time of the Year (December 15–16) with Megan Hilty; Heart and Soul (February 2, 2018) featuring James Monroe Iglehart and Capathia Jenkins; and The Best of Hollywood: Blockbuster Film Scores (March 9).
