Manhattan Theatre Club has announced a one-week extension for the world-premiere production of The Portuguese Kid, now in previews at MTC’s New York City Center Stage I. Due to popular demand, John Patrick Shanley’s romantic comedy will now play through December 3.
Tickets for the extension period will go on sale at noon October 10. They can be purchased by calling CityTix at (212) 581-1212, in person at New York City Center, or online at ManhattanTheatreClub.com.
Directed by Shanley, The Portuguese Kid is set to officially open October 24. Seinfeld star Jason Alexander and three-time Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott play two people—both dating much younger partners—who have known each other since childhood but never been involved romantically.
Rounding out the cast are Drama Desk winner Mary Testa, Pico Alexander, and Aimee Carrero.
“In Providence, Rhode Island, habitually widowed Atalanta (Scott) pays a visit to her second-rate lawyer Barry Dragonetti (Alexander),” read production notes from MTC. “Intending to settle her latest husband's affairs, this larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney. Add Barry's impossible Croatian mother (Testa), a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion.”
