John Patrick Shanley’s new romantic comedy gets a world premiere from Manhattan Theatre Club.

Manhattan Theatre Club celebrates the official opening of John Patrick Shanley’s The Portuguese Kid October 24. The new romantic comedy from the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright has been extended through December 3.

The world premiere features a cast led by Seinfeld star Jason Alexander and three-time Tony nominee Sherie Rene Scott. The two play a pair in Providence, Rhode Island, who have known each other since childhood but have never been involved romantically.

Rounding out the cast are Drama Desk winner Mary Testa, Pico Alexander, and Aimee Carrero.

The Portuguese Kid, also directed by Shanley, began Off-Broadway September 19. Performances are in MTC’s New York City Center Stage I.

“In Providence, Rhode Island, habitually widowed Atalanta (Scott) pays a visit to her second-rate lawyer Barry Dragonetti (Alexander),” read production notes from MTC. “Intending to settle her latest husband's affairs, this larger-than-life Greek tightwad quickly becomes a nightmare for her cheesy, self-aggrandizing attorney. Add Barry's impossible Croatian mother (Testa), a dash of current politics and a couple of opportunistic young lovers, and you have in hand a recipe for comic combustion.”

Shanley is the Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Doubt and the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Moonstruck.
