The musical, which debuted on Broadway in 1975 with Kevin Kline (as Jamie) and Patti LuPone (as Rosamund), is described by Roundabout as "a raucous, hilarious, sexy theatrical gem with an irresistibly catchy bluegrass score." Stand-out songs from the score include "Sleepy Man" and "Nothin' Up."

The work is based on the 1942 Eudora Welty novella.

"The Robber Bridegroom transports the audience to the Natchez Trace in Mississippi," according to press notes. "A dangerous and mysterious corner of the country teeming with a rogue’s gallery of the most beguiling con men, hucksters, and charlatans you’ll ever meet. Chief among them, Jamie Lockhart — fair‐faced gentleman by day, hard‐hearted bandit of the woods by night. When he falls for the beautiful daughter of a wealthy planter, his world and code of ethics are turned upside down."

The show features music by Waldman and lyrics and a book by Uhry. The revival's creative team includes Donyale Werle (sets), Emily Rebholz (costumes), Jeff Croiter and Jake DeGroot (lighting), Darron L West and Charles Coes (sound), Levine and Martin Lowe (orchestrations), Leah Loukas (wig and make-up) and Jacob Grigolia-Rosenbaum (fight director).
