The scripted drama about the subculture of musical theatre people is the brainchild of Steven Spielberg. Pulitzer Prize finalist Theresa Rebeck (Mauritius, "NYPD Blue") penned the pilot episode; as previously reported, Josh Safran, an executive producer at CW's "Gossip Girl," will succeed Rebeck as "showrunner" — the person in charge of all aspects of story — for Season Two of "Smash."
Shooting for the hour-long series' next chapter begins this summer in and around New York City. It will return to the NBC schedule in mid-season. Emmy Award winner Debra Messing ("Will & Grace"), Oscar winner Anjelica Huston ("Prizzi's Honor"), Davenport ("Pirates of the Caribbean" films), Tony Award winner Christian Borle (Legally Blonde the Musical, Peter and the Starcatcher), McPhee ("American Idol") and Hilty (9 to 5: The Musical) are among the stars who will return next season — smashing!
