News THE SCREENING ROOM: Celebrating 1776 With Performances from Broadway, Film, Betty Buckley and Cher (Video) Sherman Edwards' Tony Award-winning musical 1776, about the signing of the Declaration of Independence, began Broadway previews March 16, 1969, at the 46th Street Theatre, now known as the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
