News THE SCREENING ROOM: Looking Back at the Tony-Winning Spring Awakening (Video) Spring Awakening, the Tony Award-winning rock musical by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, opened Dec. 10, 2006. Here, Playbill.com looks back at the hit coming-of-age story.

The musical, which starred "Glee" actors Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, took home eight 2007 Tony Awards, including Best Book (Sater), Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones), Best Direction (Michael Mayer), Best Featured Actor (John Gallagher, Jr.), Best Lighting Design (Kevin Adams), Best Orchestrations (Sheik), Best Score (Sheik and Sater) and Best Musical.
