The Screening Room: Steve Kazee Channels Britney Spears | Playbill

News The Screening Room: Steve Kazee Channels Britney Spears Steve Kazee, winner of the 2012 Tony Award as Best Actor in a Musical for his performance as Guy in Once, stopped the show March 21 at a Los Angeles charity event for the Westhills Champions, a baseball league for special needs athletes.

He performed an acoustic guitar version of Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time," which he told Playbill.com "is a cover I have been working on for a while. I was surprised way back when by the darkness of the lyrics and so I sought to do a cover to highlight said darkness. It's fun to play because a lot of people know the song, but I think they also enjoy hearing the lyrics in a different context." Kazee, who currently co-stars on the Showtime TV hit "Shameless," said he was asked to perform by his friend and fellow actor Greg Grundberg. He is a part of The Band From TV, a collection of industry folks who make music for various charities. "I was honored to take him up on the offer," Kazee said. "It's always fun having the crowd sing along and provide backup vocals when appropriate."
