News The Violet Hour Chimes at Chicago Steppenwolf, April 17 Richard Greenberg's latest, The Violet Hour, was recently announced for a Broadway bow this fall, but before that happens Chicago audiences will see the play at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, April 17-June 15.

Greenberg is getting a seasoned quintet of actors. Josh Hamilton (Broadway's Proof, Off-Broadway's Gone Home) plays the central character of John Seavering Pace. Regular Steppenwolf player Tim Hopper (Broadway's Present Laughter, Off-Broadway's The Dying Gaul) is Gidger, his employee. Kate Arrington, who acted in Greenberg's Everett Beekin at Lincoln Center Theater, is Rosamund Plinth. Ora Jones and Kevin Stark, two Chicago theatre regulars, round out the cast as Jessie Brewster and Denis McCleary. Terry Kinney directs.

The Violet Hour takes place in the small New York City office of John Seavering Pace, a writer who, having made it through World War I, is ready to get on with the future. Unfortunately, he can't find his theatre tickets, and his decisions during the day will impact the lives of four others: his employee, two budding writers and his friend's fiance. Steppenwolf calls the play a "comic fantasy about fate, ambition and loyalty."

Manhattan Theatre Club will present The Violet Hour at its new Broadway home, The Biltmore Theatre, starting Oct. 16. Greenberg's Take Me Out is now running on Broadway. A separate staging of The Violet Hour had its world premiere at South Coast Repertory in fall 2002.

Tickets are $35-$55. Call (312) 335-1650.
