Matthew Martin and Tim Realbuto, the writing team behind Ghostlight, have teamed up to co-write the play The Weak Ones, which begins performances September 8 at The Hudson Guild Theatre. The show received a full workshop production earlier this year.

Inspired by true events, the story follows the relationship between a self-confessed murderer and the lawyer who must defend her. Featured in the cast is Hamilton star Ariana DeBose, who provides the voice of the 911 operator.

Martin directs a cast that also includes Realbuto, Abigail Ludrof, Cathy Salvodon, Paul Thomas Ryan, Kyle Doherty and Drew Powell.

Here’s how production notes bill the new play: “On the brink of a highly publicized case George Taylor, a single father struggling to balance work and family after an unspeakable tragedy, must defend self-confessed murderer Samantha Barrish, a woman society has deemed a monster. But might there be two sides to every story? Inspired by true events, The Weak Ones examines the balance struck when two seemingly different people are both out of options.”

Performances run through September 11 as part of the Thespis Theatre Festival. For information and to purchase tickets visit brownpapertickets.com/event/2560175 or TheWeakOnesPlay.com.
