LAST CHANCE→ Julia Jordan and Juliana Nash's Murder Ballad, about a love triangle gone horribly awry, closes at the Union Square Theatre. John Ellison Conlee, Will Swenson and Caissie Levy star in the rock musical that pits an uptown literary professor (Conlee) against a downtown bartender (Swenson) for the affections of a lovelorn young mother (Levy). Whoopi Goldberg hosts. Proceeds benefit A Broader Way Foundation, Menzel and Diggs' charity that supports arts programs for young girls in underserved communities. Tuesday, July 23
PREVIEWS (FREE)→ The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park musical adaptation of Love's Labour's Lost, from the Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson team, Michael Friedman (score) and Alex Timbers (direction), starts performances at the Delacorte Theater. This will mark the first new Shakespeare-based musical to debut at the Delacorte since the Tony-winning Two Gentlemen of Verona first performed there in 1971. Rachel Dratch, Daniel Breaker, Kevin Del Aguila, Colin Donnell, Rebecca Naomi Jones and Patti Murin star. Officially opens Aug. 12. OPENING→ Let It Be, a new jukebox musical featuring the songs of the Beatles, officially opens on Broadway. GO→ The final presentation in the new Encores! Off-Center series — celebrating lost Off-Broadway gems — will be the Kathleen Marshall-helmed I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road, a 1970s musical from Gretchen Cryer and Nancy Ford. Renee Elise Goldsberry stars as a former pop singer attempting a comeback. Jason Rabinowitz, Christina Sajous, Jennifer Sanchez and Frederick Weller also star. GO→ Michael Mayer directs a concert reading of a new musical titled A Musical Inspired by the Brooklyn Hero Supply Company, featuring a book by Simon Rich and music and lyrics by Peter Lerman. Matt Doyle stars as an idealistic young Brooklynite who dreams of being a superhero in this developmental new Powerhouse Theater production.
