LAST CHANCE→ The long running Off-Broadway show Freud's Last Session, which chronicles a fictional meeting between legendary psychoanalyst Dr. Sigmund Freud and a young C.S. Lewis, closes this weekend (Sunday) after two years and two Off-Broadway venues. The Mark St. Germain drama got its world premiere at Massachusetts' Barrington Stage Company, which has re-Christened one of its theatres the St. Germain Stage after the playwright. Sunday, July 22
LAST CHANCE→ The Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire, the recent recipient of the Actors' Equity Association's Excellence in Diversity Award due to its multi-racial cast featuring Blair Underwood, Nicole Ari Parker, Daphne Rubin-Vega and Wood Harris, closes on Broadway. Set in steamy New Orleans, the play is punctuated with music by Grammy-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard and is directed by Emily Mann. (Broadhurst Theatre, 236 W. 44th St., btwn. 6th & 7th Aves. LAST CHANCE→ Five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury will depart The Best Man. Taking over in the role of the powerful southern belle, Mrs. Sue-Ellen Gamadge, will be Tony winner Elizabeth Ashley. Ashley will join recently added cast members John Stamos, Kristin Davis and Cybill Shepherd in Gore Vidal's political comedy about the dirty dealings during a presidential primary. PREVIEWS→ Into the Woods gets a much anticipated revival in Central Park's outdoor Delacorte Theater as part of Shakespeare in the Park's 50th Anniversary at the famed venue. Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's famous fairytale-inspired musical features a cast filled with Hollywood and Broadway stars, including Donna Murphy as the Witch, Denis O'Hare as the Baker, Amy Adams as the Baker's Wife, Jessie Mueller as Cinderella and Chip Zien (who originated the role of the Baker in the 1987 Broadway production) as the Mysterious Man. One of the mythical "Giants in the Sky" will have a familiar voice too — courtesy of Tony winner Glenn Close. Timothy Sheader, who staged the acclaimed production of at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London, is at the helm stateside. PREVIEWS→ After a three-year break, Gerard Alessandrini's Forbidden Broadway has returned to the 47th Street Theatre with a whole new crop of shows to poke fun at. On Alessandrini's list of parodies are the new Broadwayified version of Porgy and Bess, the legal drama of Spider-Man, the chipper dancing boys of Newsies, the dance stylings of Matthew Broderick in Nice Work If You Can Get It, Broadway's multiple Jesuses (read Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar and The Book of Mormon), and Ricky Martin's portrayal of a gleeful revolutionary in Evita. Wednesday, July 25
GO→ Bradley Cooper and Patricia Clarkson star in the Williamstown Theatre Festival's revival of The Elephant Man. Cooper plays the horribly disfigured John Merrick of the title who goes from living as a carnival freak to that of a member of London's high society. Tony nominee Scott Ellis directs. Thursday, July 26
GO→ The 6th annual Summer Shorts Festival kicks off this week promising a series of new one-act productions (one an evening of plays, the other of musicals) in repertory. Friday, July 27
GO→ Multitalented actor, playwright and musician Anthony Rapp once again tries his hand at direction with the premiere of Born Blue, a self-described "existential rock and soul musical set in a post-apocalyptic world." The musical features the songs of Broadway actress-songwriter Caren Tackett. A portion of the proceeds will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
