The Wild Party, rich in Tony Award nominations but not in awards, announced June 6 that it would close June 11 at the Virginia Theatre.
Edgy, bold, raucous and risky, Michael John LaChiusa's tuner is based on Joseph Moncure March's obscure 1928 narrative verse poem of the same name, about a sex-and-booze-driven blowout that ends in violence. It opened April 13 after playing previews that began March 10. Mandy Patinkin, Eartha Kitt and Toni Collette were all nominated for their performances, and LaChiusa was nommed for Best Score and Best Book (co written with director George C. Wolfe).
It was also nominated for Best Musical and Best Lighting Design. By the Sunday close, it will have played 36 previews and 68 performances.
The Wild Party is produced by The Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, George C. Wolfe, Producer; Scott Rudin/Paramount Pictures; Roger Berlind; and Elizabeth Williams and Anita Waxman.
The show's original cast recording is on the Decca Broadway label.
