News Theatre Companies Among Awarded for NEA's Over $21 Million Arts Grants The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) will award more than $21 million in grants to 839 recipients in the first major grant announcement of 2005. $21,059,750 will be distributed to nonprofit organizations across the country.

The NEA grants will be awarded in the categories of Creativity, Services to Arts Organizations and Artists, Literature Fellowships and Leadership Initiatives. The entire budget for 2004 amounts to $122.5 million.

The grants will be used towards projects in multiple disciplines of the arts — including dance, design, folk and traditional arts, literature, local arts agencies, media arts, multidisciplinary, museums, music, musical theater, opera, presenting, theatre and visual arts.

"Through these grants and fellowships, the National Endowment for the Arts is providing critical investments in the American arts," said Chairman of the Arts Endowment Dana Gioia.

"Access to Artistic Excellence" grants — the largest subcategory — received 1,353 applications which resulted in 780 grants that total more than $19.9 million. Theatre companies, festivals and spaces across the country will benefit from the grants including New York City's Brooklyn Academy of Music and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

In the musical theater realm, the following companies will receive grants for various new projects and programs: About Face Theatre Collective (Chicago, IL), American Music Theater Festival, Inc. Though only down 27 applications from last year, the number of recipients dropped (to 839) from 915 recipients in the 2004 grant announcement. Grants to be distributed in the coming year total $25,352,000 — which is down over $4 million (the approximate change in NEA's budget) from last year's $21,059,750. The "Services to Arts Organizations and Artists" and "Leadership Initiatives" subcategories have also been eliminated.
