The one-hour drama is inspired by Charles Dickens' "Bleak House," a novel that details the legal battles resulting from a case in which a testator made out different and conflicting wills.

"Fortune" is set in the present and follows a prominent New York family and the battle over an inheritance after the patriarch dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances.

Rebeck is developing the work with executive producers John Wells and Andrew Stearn at Warner Horizon.

Rebeck created the recently canceled TV show "Smash." A Pulitzer Prize finalist as the co-author of Omnium Gatherum, her plays also include Mauritius, Seminar, Dead Accounts, Bad Dates, The Scene and The Understudy. She has also authored the feature films "Harriet the Spy" and "Gossip," and earned a Peabody Award for "NYPD Blue."
