Three Tony Winners Offer Dramatic Reading of Friel’s Faith Healer March 10

News   Three Tony Winners Offer Dramatic Reading of Friel’s Faith Healer March 10 Philip (Lend Me a Tenor) Bosco, Blair (Copenhagen) Brown and Jim (Barnum) Dale will all take part in a one-night-only dramatic reading of Faith Healer March 10.

The three Tony winners will interpret the Brian Friel drama, which New York magazine’s John Simon once labeled “a masterpiece.” Judy Friel — the playwright’s daughter — will direct the 8 PM reading at Manhattan’s 92nd Street Y. Faith Healer, which premiered on Broadway in 1979, concerns three characters: Frank Hardy, a traveling faith healer; Grace, Frank’s long-suffering spouse; and Frank’s loyal manager, Teddy. Bosco will play Frank, Brown his wife Grace, and Dale will portray Teddy. About the upcoming event, director Friel recently said, “We’ll do the dramatic reading very simply and minimally, concentrating on the actor, the monologue, and the audience. Faith Healer is that rare thing nowadays: big writing. Everything depends on the word — and the Y offers the ideal home for that.”

Born in Omagh, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, Brian Friel’s plays include Philadelphia, Here I Come!; The Loves of Cass McGuire; Lovers; Crystal and Fox; The Gentle Island; The Freedom of the City; Living Quarters; Volunteers; Aristocrats; Translations; The Communication Cord; Fathers and Sons; Making History; Dancing at Lughnasa; Wonderful Tennessee; Molly Sweeney; and Give Me Your Answer, Do!. Faith Healer’s Broadway debut played April 5 to April 22, 1979. The cast included James Mason, Clarissa Kaye and Donal Donnelly.

Tickets for the Faith Healer reading are priced at $16. For information, tickets or a catalogue of 92nd Street Y programs, call (212) 415-5500. The 92nd Street Y box office is located at 92nd Street and Lexington Avenue.
