News "Thugs the Musical," With David Alan Grier and Margaret Cho, Will Get NYC Screening "Thugs the Musical," the new faux-documentary short film starring David Alan Grier, Margaret Cho and Kevin Avery, will be screened in New York City Dec. 15 as part of the New York No Limits 2012 Film Summit.

Comedian Avery wrote the screenplay for the film, as well as original musical material along with composer Alex Burke. Liam Sullivan directs. It will be screened at 7 PM at the White Box.

Here's how it's billed: "'Thugs the Musical' follows the adventures of a struggling and delusional actor, his doomed musical production and the misfit group of actors he's assembled as his cast. After years of auditioning but not being considered 'black enough,' Michael Gardner decides to create a musical. His mission: to present a gritty, authentic depiction of life in the ghetto through the fabulous world of musical theatre. The film, shot as a faux documentary, chronicles the making of the play from rehearsals through its disastrous opening weekend and features such musical numbers as 'Who's That Keepin' It Real?,' 'Drive-By' and 'Oh No She Di-in't.'"

Avery is joined by Tony Award nominee Grier (Porgy and Bess, Race), Cho ("I’m The One That I Want," "Drop Dead Diva"), Rachel True ("The Craft"), Baron Vaughn ("Fairly Legal") and Wu Tang Clan's Prodigal Sunn.

Tickets, priced $12 in advance, are available by visiting NewYorkNoLimits.com.
