Ali Ewoldt, who recently starred on Broadway as Christine in The Phantom of the Opera, and Matthew Hydzik and Natalie Cortez, who both appeared in the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, have been tapped for the leads in a special concert version of the latter musical March 9–11, 2018, at the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, California.
Tickets go on sale 8 AM Pacific Time (11 AM Eastern Time) September 12 via Mccallumtheatre.com for West Side Story: In Concert, which will be directed by Chad Hilligus and which will star Ewoldt as Maria, Hydzik as Tony, and Cortez as Anita. Ewoldt also played her role in the 2009–2011 national tours of West Side Story. Tickets can also be ordered by phone at (760) 340-2787.
The production is being presented as part of the theatre’s celebration of the centennial of the birth of composer Leonard Bernstein. The 1957 show has lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. This production will feature an onstage 40-piece orchestra under the baton of Grammy-winning conductor Richard Kaufman.
Other casting is scheduled to be announced in the coming weeks.
Hydzik played Tony in West Side Story and Kenickie in Grease on Broadway. Ewoldt made her Broadway debut as Cosette in the 2006 revival of Les Misérables, and subsequently played Tuptim and Luisa in New York revivals of The King and I and The Fantasticks, respectively.
Cortez made her Broadway debut playing Diana Morales in the 2006 revival of A Chorus Line. She portrayed Anita in the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story, and has appeared in the Public Theater productions of Giant and Here Lies Love.
