While official details from Disney are yet to be released, the High School Musical series is reported to be a spin-off of the successful franchise films from 2006, 2007, and 2008. The films helped launch the careers of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale, and more, though they are not attached to the TV series.

Federle is the author of the Nate series (Better Nate Than Never and Five, Six, Seven Nate!, with Nate Expectations releasing in September) and a collection of literary cocktail guides. Following appearances in Gypsy, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, The Little Mermaid, and Billy Elliot, he made his Broadway writing debut as a collaborator on the book for Tuck Everlasting.
