The Educational Theatre Association presented the Volunteer of the Year Award to Tony-nominated writer Hunter Bell and director and theatre teacher Krista Carson Elhai July 20. Both members of the EdTA board of directors, the two were recognized for their leadership and contributions to the community.

Bell helmed New York’s Broadway Back to School fundraiser, uniting Broadway and Hollywood stars to perform for the event.

Though he had appeared on Broadway in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bell shot to fame with the musical he co-wrote with Jeff Bowen and starred in: [title of show]. Debuting at the 2004 New York Musical Theatre Festival, the show eventually made it to Broadway for a brief but beloved run in 2008.

Bell and Elhai were presented with their awards in Washington, D.C. at the EdTA Leadership Summit. The Summit is followed by the organization’s Arts Advocacy program, which involves “visits to members of Congress by state delegations.”
