Film & TV News Tony and Emmy Winner Christine Baranski Wishes Bernadette Peters a Happy Opening Plus, the actor sings from the hypothetical The Good Fight musical.

On February 22, Emmy- and Tony-winning actor Christine Baranski visited The Late Show With Stephen Colbert just before catching the evening performance of Broadway’s Hello, Dolly!, where Bernadette Peters was opening in the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi.

After wishing her friend “break a leg” from the Ed Sullivan stage, Baranski regaled the audience with the story of how she actually did break her leg just a couple of months before she opened in Mame.

“I was walking on the streets in New York to a bus stop when I slipped and landed straight on this kneecap and smashed it,” she said. “It was February, and I had to start rehearsals in April. I did crazy rehab, and we kind of renamed the musical ‘Lame’ or ‘Maimed.‘” She got through on “pure grit.”

Baranski won Tony Awards for The Real Thing in 1984 and Rumors in 1989. In 1992, she won the Drama Desk for her performance in Lips Together, Teeth Apart. Having made her Broadway debut in Hide and Seek, she’s also appeared in Hurlyburly, The House of Blue Leaves, Nick & Nora, and Boeing-Boeing. Baranski is best known for her work on screen as Diane Lockhart from The Good Wife and the character’s own spinoff, The Good Fight. This summer, she’ll reprise her role as Tanya in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, after starring alongside Meryl Streep in the original.

Host Stephen Colbert couldn’t let Baranski escape without some musical fun. So the duo performed an original musical number from the faux musical version of The Good Fight before Baranski headed to the Shubert Theatre.
