On February 12, The Color Purple took home the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. During the televised CBS broadcast, newly minted Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo joined recording artist (and Broadway producer) John Legend to sing “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys for the In Memoriam tribute.

The show featured individual tributes to George Michael, Sharon Jones, Phife Dawg, and Prince, yet 2016 was a year in which we lost many other artists. Recording Academy President Neil Portnow introduced the segment before Legend began a solo performance that led into the duet.
