Shelby Corcoran, biological mother to Lea Michele's character, Rachel Berry, will have a major story on the upcoming season that can span from 10-12 episodes. Menzel will be the only major addition to the cast of third season, besides the winner of Oxygen's "Glee Project."

Menzel was seen on "Glee" in the show's first season for five episodes. Her character, coach of rival team Vocal Adrenaline, attempted to reconnect with her daughter and defeat The New Directions.

In season three, Corcoran will return to Lima, OH, from New York to join McKinley High School as a new teacher, complicating things for Rachel as well as former flame Will Schuester, played by Matthew Morrison.

Menzel won the Tony Award in 2004 for her performance in Wicked. She has also been seen on Broadway in Aida and Rent.

The New Directions from McKinley High School will be back Sept. 20 when "Glee" returns to its Tuesday-night slot at 8 PM ET on Fox.
