News Tony Champ Avenue Q Slated for a Labor Day Opening in Las Vegas Broadway's Tony Award-reigning musical champion Avenue Q will open its Las Vegas production at the Wynn Las Vegas resort on Labor Day (Sept. 5), Playbill.com has learned.

The puppet and people-populated musical — which recouped its initial Broadway investment last year — currently plays at the John Golden Theatre. The show will be next seen in the Nevada locale in a 1,200-seat ($40 million) theatre within Wynn Las Vegas, a new $2.7-billion casino resort which just opened April 28.

Producers are also currently searching for a theatre in London and considering a number of options, but the Labor Day Las Vegas opening is firm according to sources close to the production.

The 2004 Tony Award winner for Best Musical, Avenue Q sends up popular children's television shows such as "Sesame Street" and "The Electric Company," while serving up a bounty of pop culture references. The production bears the warning: "Full puppet nudity, not suitable for children."

The show's creators Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx earned a Tony for their score as did bookwriter Jeff Whitty and the musical itself garnered the top prize as Best Musical at the 2004 Tony Awards. Jason Moore (Steel Magnolias) directed with musical direction by Gary Adler (Altar Boyz).

Tickets for the Avenue Q at the Wynn, 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South in Las Vegas, NV are not yet available.
