The Muny, the nation's largest outdoor theatre, has assembled a lineup of all-star creatives for its centennial season in St. Louis' Forest Park. The season features two Tony-winning Best Musicals not previously seen at the venue: Jersey Boys and Jerome Robbins' Broadway. The St. Louis theatre will also present limited engagements of Gypsy, Annie, The Wiz, Singin’ in the Rain, and Meet Me in St. Louis.
The upcoming season will launch June 11, 2018, with Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, directed by Cynthia Onrubia (Dame Edna: The Royal Tour) with musical direction by Michael Horsley and production supervision by Chris Bailey. Performances will continue through June 17.
Denis Jones, a Tony nominee for Holiday Inn, will direct The Wiz, which runs June 19–25. The family favorite, adapted from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, will also feature choreography by Camille A. Brown (choreographer of the current, critically acclaimed revival of Once On This Island) and musical direction by Darryl Archibald.
Singin’ in the Rain, which will be seen at the outdoor venue June 27–July 3, will be directed by Marc Bruni (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), choreographed by Rommy Sandhu, and musically directed by Ben Whiteley.
The Tony-winning Jersey Boys, which recently returned to New York at New World Stages, will be directed and choreographed by Josh Rhodes (Rodgers + Hammerstein Cinderella, Bright Star). Running July 9–16, the production will also feature musical direction by Rick Bertone.
Charles Strouse, Martin Charnin, and Thomas Meehan’s Annie will be directed by John Tartaglia, best known for his Tony-nominated performance in Avenue Q. Jessica Hartman will choreograph and Colin Welford will be the music director for the Tony-winning musical, which will be seen July 18–25.
Gypsy, the classic showbiz tale of a domineering mother and a wallflower who becomes the country's best-known stripper, will feature direction by Rob Ruggiero, choreography by Ralph Perkins, and music direction by James Moore. Performances are scheduled for July 27–August 2.
The season will conclude with Meet Me in St. Louis, running August 4–12. Tony nominee Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who directed the Broadway revival of Ragtime, will direct with choreography by Josh Walden, who was the associate director and associate choreographer for the aforementioned revival. The music director is Charlie Alterman.
Casting will be announced at a later time. The outdoor venue regularly attracts Broadway favorites; the 2017 roster included Tony nominees Beth Malone, Emily Skinner, Constantine Maroulis, and Christopher Sieber.
