Actor Danny DeVito made his Broadway debut earlier this season in Roundabout Theatre Company’s production of Arthur Miller’s The Price. The production marks the Broadway return of Mark Ruffalo and also stars Tony Shalhoub and Jessica Hecht. Joining this trifecta of actors, DeVito felt he needed to really warm up for his role as the 90-year-old furniture appraiser.
“I got a trampoline,” he told Seth Meyers on Late Night. “What I do is I go early to the show and I start jumping a little bit, then I get some makeup put on, jump, put some clothes on, jump.”
“Now I have to go back to the first two times and realize that you were naked,” laughed Meyers.
True, DeVito says he starts jumping naked on a trampoline, but “gradually I wind up in the costume on the trampoline, with an overcoat, a wool suit, the cane, that hat—it’s the full nine yards,” he said. “I should take a picture of that.”
DeVito also discussed meeting President Barack Obama and his daughter Malia, offering them snacks backstage. Meanwhile, DeVito does some now-famous onstage snacking of his own.
After arguing with Ruffalo’s character, DeVito sits down to crack open a hard-boiled egg, eating to calm his nerves. “Depending on how the scene went before—like if I’m feeling he was good to me, I’ll leave him alone a little bit,” he says of how much spittle and egg spray he decides to deliver in Ruffalo’s direction. “But if he pissed me off a little bit, I start spitting at him—yolk, white, everything going on.”
