The Academy Award nominee is in negotiations to play the pirate Blackbeard in the film "Pan," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The origin story of Peter Pan will feature a script by Jason Fuchs and will be directed by Joe Wright ("Atonement," "Pride & Prejudice"). It will tell the story of Hook, a member of the crew on Blackbeard's pirate ship, and Pan, who become friends. The two later part ways.

The origins of Peter Pan are also explored on stage in Peter and the Starcatcher. Written by Tony Award nominee Rick Elice and directed by Tony Award winner Roger Rees and Tony Award nominee Alex Timbers, and based on The New York Times best selling Disney-Hyperion novel by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, the play opened on Broadway April 15, 2012, and ran until Jan. 20, 2013. Currently playing Off-Broadway at New World Stages, the production will close Jan. 12, 2014.

Jackman's film credits include "Prisoners," "The Wolverine," "Les Misérables" and "X-Men." He has performed on Broadway in The Boy From Oz, A Steady Rain and Hugh Jackman: Back on Broadway.
