The actor visited The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to talk about impersonating the First Lady and how she got her start singing.

On July 24, Tony winner Laura Benanti visited Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. Approximately one year since she first appeared on the show to offer her impression of Melania Trump, Benanti looked back on how her gig as The Late Show’s “Resident Melania” began.

Benanti also talked about growing up in a musical household. Her mother, Linda Wonneberger, an actor-turned-voice teacher, actually taught Benanti growing up. The two recently performed together at Feinstein’s/54 Below in a mother-daughter cabaret show, which was Wonneberger’s first stage appearance in 34 years.

Benanti gave birth to her first child, daughter Ella Rose, in February. It was recently announced that Benanti will not continue her recurring role on The CW’s Supergirl, but it has been rumored that she may co-star opposite Amy Schumer in Steve Martin’s new play, though reports of this have not been confirmed.
