Variety reports that New Line Cinema and HBO will produce a "Sex and the City" motion picture, which will star its four original leading ladies: Tony Award winner Cynthia Nixon, Emmy winner Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis and Kim Cattrall. Michael Patrick King, the series' longtime executive producer, will pen the script and direct. King's co-producers will include actress Parker, John Melfi and Darren Star.

Actress Cattrall, who was seen on the London stage last fall in the Donmar Warehouse's revival of David Mamet’s The Cryptogram, had reportedly been holding out for a better deal when negotiations began two years ago. The industry paper says the actress is content with her current deal, which includes a large salary, input on her movie scenes as well as a future series deal with the HBO cable network.

"Sex and the City" will likely begin shooting this fall. New Line will distribute the motion picture.

"Sex and the City" ran on the HBO network from 1998-2004. The series was based on the autobiographical columns penned by Candace Bushnell.

Cynthia Nixon is best known for playing Miranda on "Sex and the City." Last fall she was seen Off-Broadway in the title role of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for The New Group, and last year she won a Tony Award for her performance in Rabbit Hole for Manhattan Theatre Club. At age 14, Nixon made her stage debut on Broadway in The Philadelphia Story and at age 18 performed in two Broadway shows — Hurlyburly and The Real Thing — simultaneously. Her other Broadway credits include The Women, Indiscretions (Tony nomination), The Last Night of Ballyhoo, Angels in America and The Heidi Chronicles. Nixon also appeared in the television movie "Warm Springs" (Emmy nomination) plus such films as "Amadeus" and "Addams Family Values." In addition to her numerous screen credits, Sarah Jessica Parker has been seen on Broadway in The Innocents, Annie, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and Once Upon a Mattress. She is the recipient of two Drama Desk Award nominations for her work in Off-Broadway's Wonder of the World and Sylvia.

Kim Cattrall has been seen on the New York stage in Wild Honey and on the London stage in Whose Life Is It Anyway? and The Cryptogram.

Kristin Davis was seen in the London premiere of The Exonerated.
