Lise and Ceil Friedman created the 2006 book of the same title that tells the true story of actual letters written to the fictional Shakespeare character which are sent from around the world to Verona, Italy.
Variety reports that Oscar nominee Jose Rivera ("The Motorcycle Diaries") has adapted the book along with Tim Sullivan for the screen. Gary Winick directs the film, which will begin shooting in Italy in late June.
In addition to Redgrave ("Evening," Long Days Journey Into Night) and Seyfried ("Mean Girls," "Mamma Mia"), the cast includes Gael Garcia Bernal ("Motorcycle Diaries") and Franco Nero.
Seyfried and Bernal are cast as a couple traveling throughout Italy who receive a letter to Juliet penned by Redgrave. Redgrave and the young couple begin a search through Tuscany to locate a young man (Nero) with whom the elder woman had an affair years before.
Ellen Barkin and Caroline Kaplan produce the film.
