News Tony Wins and Performances Prompt Broadway Box-Office Boosts Following the June 8 CBS broadcast of the 68th Annual Tony Awards, Tony-winning productions and shows that offered performances at the 2014 ceremony enjoyed a boost in their day-after box-office sales.

The Tony Award-winning musical Best Musical A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder took in "close to a million" dollars June 9, according to a representative for the production. The production — which has grossed a total of $16.5 million (as compared to a total of $25.1 million for its Tony competitor Beautiful: The Carole King Musical, which has been running for 64 less performances) since its first Oct. 22, 2013, preview — took in $733,879 for the week ending June 8.

Beautiful, which garnered Tonys for its leading lady Jessie Mueller and sound designer Brian Ronan, also took in approximately $1 million following the Tonys — about three to four times what the production normally takes in from Sunday night until the end of the day on Monday, according to a production spokesperson.

The Tony Awards featured a duet between Tony winner Mueller and the real-life music icon she portrays, Carole King, who praised the production before introducing the cast.

Although the Tony-winning Best Revival Hedwig and the Angry Inch is declining to discuss post-Tony wraps, representatives stated that last week Hedwig set a box-office record at the Belasco with $1,021,707.87 for seven shows (Hedwig is only offering seven-show performance weeks during its run). This beats the show's own house record of $993,497 set the week of April 28.

The Tony Award-winning Best Play Revival A Raisin in the Sun, which will close June 15, has taken in a total of $14.9 million as of June 8, but production representatives have not yet responded to Playbill.com's request for comment regarding recoupment. As for the Tony-nominated Les Misérables, which performed "One Day More" on the telecast, box-office sales were up 50 percent from an average Monday. Daily sales figures are not released for Cameron Mackintosh productions, according to the Les Miz publicity office.

Though Disney declined to offer an official statement for Aladdin — which offered the splashy performance of "Friend Like Me" and took a Tony home for its featured actor James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie — Playbill.com has learned through a source with knowledge of the show's box office that the show took in over $1 million (about five times the normal weekday wrap) June 9.

Advance sales are for Aladdin are nearly $18 million, the second highest on Broadway, and last week's gross of $1.28 million was the highest to date, making Aladdin the highest-grossing new production of the spring.

Advanced discussions are underway with partners on four international productions of Aladdin.

The box offices at If/Then, Rocky, Cabaret and Violet (which were all represented with performances on the awards show, with one Tony win for Rocky) have all seen increases.

Representatives for All the Way and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill — which each took home two Tonys June 9 — as well as Bullets Over Broadway and After Midnight (which were represented on the awards show, with one Tony win for After Midnight choreographer Warren Carlyle) have not yet responded to Playbill.com's request for comment on box-office sales.
