The jazz band will be joined each week by a Broadway performer, who will offer tunes from the Great American Songbook. The series kicks off with Phantom of the Opera star Howard McGillin. Two shows are offered each Tuesday night, beginning at 9:30 PM and ending at midnight. Among other stars scheduled to join Traina and his Quintet are Spamalot's Marin Mazzie, Hairspray's Michele Pawk, Curtains' Jason Danieley and Karen Ziemba and A Chorus Line's Michael Berresse.
Joe Traina, an accomplished clarinetist and saxophonist, leads the Joe Traina Quintet on "Tea for Two," his newest CD that was released in December 2006. The recording features a mix of Broadway show tunes and jazz standards. He is joined on the 12-track disc by Mike Karn (tenor saxophone), Tim Regusis (piano), Scott Neumann (drums) and Sean Smith (bass).
Howard McGillin holds the record for the longest-running Phantom in the show's history. A Tony Award nominee for his performances in Anything Goes and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, McGillin has also appeared on Broadway in Kiss of the Spider Woman, She Loves Me, The Secret Garden and Sunday in the Park with George. On the London stage he starred in Mack and Mabel, and his solo recording is titled "Howard McGillin: Where Time Stands Still." McGillin also starred in the Chicago and D.C. productions of Sondheim and John Weidman's Bounce and the national tour of Peter Pan.
The Sardi's series is presented by Joe Cantor and Steve Garrin.
