News Trav'lin' Reading, with Burke, Hall, Jones, Presented May 20 The York Theatre Company's Developmental Reading Series continues May 20 at 7 PM with a reading of Trav'lin', which rediscovers the work of an obscure 1920's songwriter.

The cast of Trav'lin' includes Pilin Anice, Jonathan Burke, Randy Donaldson, Darryl Rueben Hall, Jannie Jones, Vanessa A. Jones and John Kurzynowski. Ben West directs with Lafayette Harris, Jr. providing musical direction.

The reading is free and open to the public, but reservations are required.

According to press notes, "This warm-hearted musical follows the romantic travails of three couples in 1930's Harlem. The story centers on George, an older gentleman and a self-proclaimed expert on love, who meets his match when he befriends a down-on-her-luck stranger only to find she is not the person she seems to be. The tuneful and jazzy score rediscovers Harlem Renaissance songwriter J.C. Johnson, whose musical collaborators included Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Ella Fitzgerald." The show features additional music by Gary Holmes and Alvin Shapiro.

Trav'lin' returns to the York in a revised version after its initial presentation in the Developmental Reading Series in February 2009.

The York Theatre is located at Saint Peter's Church, at Lexington Avenue and 54th Street. For more information and to make reservations, visit yorktheatre.org.
