Tharp, who created the award-winning musical Movin' Out —featuring the songbook of Billy Joel — has set her sights on the work of the late crooner Frank Sinatra for the world premiere of Come Fly With Me, which launches the Alliance season Sept. 23-Oct. 11.
Created, directed and choreographed by Tharp, Come Fly With Me promises audiences will "remember that song… that dance… that special someone – that moment when you fell in love and fell in love again," with a big band playing such songs as "Pick Yourself Up," "Witchcraft" and "My Way."
Variety reports that the production will launch a national tour in summer 2010. Producers — His Way Entertainment in association with WAT Limited and Troika Marketing — may also bring the new work to Broadway and international audiences.
Executive producer Nicholas Howey told the industry paper, "With this brand, you wouldn't ignore New York."
Fifteen performers, who fall in and out of love, will be featured in Come Fly With Me, which will boast a 17-piece band accompanying recorded vocals by the late Sinatra with additional vocals by Dee Daniels. No casting has been announced.
The Alliance Theatre is located within the Woodruff Arts Center, at the corner of Peachtree Street and 15th Street, in Atlanta, GA. For tickets and more information phone (404) 733-5000 or visit www.alliancetheatre.org.
