News U.K.'s Kneehigh to Premiere Latest Show Steptoe & Son at Base in Cornwall, then Visit Leeds and Tour Kneehigh, the U.K. theatre company based in Cornwall whose stage version of Brief Encounter played Broadway, is now adapting Ray Galton and Alan Simpson's British TV series "Steptoe & Son" for the stage. The world premiere will be staged at their base at the Ayslum, near Truro, beginning performances July 21 for a run through to Aug. 5, then again from Aug. 14-24, before visiting the West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, Sept. 14 to Oct. 13, then touring.

Adapted and directed by Emma Rice, it is co-produced by Kneehigh and West Yorkshire Playhouse. According to press materials, it charts the tender, cruel and surprising dance of father and son. Taking on the roles of one of television's most famous pairings is Kneehigh's Mike Shepherd playing Albert and Dean Nolan, who will make his Kneehigh debut as dreamer Harold.

In a press statement, Rice commented, "The words, situations and basic genius of this script are all the work and imagination of Ray Galton and Alan Simpson. I laughed and wept in equal measure as I made my way through the scripts that make up the 'Steptoe & Son' cannon. The work is deeper, darker and more intricate than I'd ever realised, watching as a child. I've tried to enable and reveal the heart-breaking and perfectly observed characters that had generations glued to their TV’s for over a decade. I am so lucky! I feel I am walking through history: my parents’, my grandparents’ and my own. It has been the chance of a lifetime to dive into such an iconic and important body of work."
