The six-episode series is created by Greg Berlanti, Laurence Mark and Warner Horizon.

The cast also features Tony Award winner Ellen Burstyn (Same Time, Next Year) as Margaret Barrish, James Wolk as Douglas Hammond, Sebastian Stan (Talk Radio) as T.J. Hammond, Brittany Ishibashi as Anne Ogami, Ciaran Hinds (The Seafarer) as Bud Hammond, Carla Gugino (The Road to Mecca) as Susan Berg, Dylan Baker as Vice President Fred Collier and Adrian Pasdar as Paul Garcetti.

Also appearing are Tony Award winner Vanessa Redgrave (Long Day's Journey Into Night), who plays Diane Nash, a lesbian Supreme Court Justice, and Kristine Nielsen (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson).

The series, according to USA, "pulls back the curtain on the polished facade of a former first-family as they navigate the complex world of political and personal ambition. Sigourney Weaver stars as former first lady and current Secretary of State Elaine Barrish Hammond who is attempting to keep her family together while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and fending off the hungry DC journalist (Gugino) who is bent on destroying her career. Exploring themes that resonate in the current political landscape and taking viewers beyond the glossy ads and well-written public speeches, 'Political Animals' will reveal a vulnerable family on the verge of falling apart."
