Uys, who previously performed Elections and Erections in London, brings the politically-themed work to America to coincide with the upcoming U.S. presidential elections and the South African General Election in April of 2009. Elections and Erections is co-presented by LaMaMa and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Press notes for Elections and Erections state, "It is his latest, most outrageous attack on political outrage, which underlines the 'mock' in democracy." In addition to his character Evita, Uys brings with him "special guests" including Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and Desmond Tutu.
BC/EFA executive director Tom Viola said in a statement, "It is great to have Pieter kicking up some dust, pointing a well-deserved finger and metaphorically giving the finger to those here and abroad who blatantly continue to profit and hold onto the power to do so at the suffering of others, millions of others. BC/EFA welcomes the chance to give Pieter (and his dear friend Evita Bezuidenhout) a platform to do what he does so well: tell the truth with outrageous humor, cutting intellect and uncommon courage."
Uys and his alter ego Evita Bezuidenhout have appeared on the London stage in Adapt or Dye, Foreign Aids and Evita for President! Uys earned a 2004 Obie for staging Foreign Aids at LaMaMa.
Cape Town, South African native, Pieter-Dirk Uys has written and performed 20 plays and over 30 revues and one-man shows throughout South Africa and abroad. Paradise is Closing Down, Panorama, God's Forgotten, Faces in the Wall and Just Like Home have been performed internationally, and his one-man shows Adapt or Dye, One Man One Volt, You ANC Nothing Yet, Truth Omissions, Live from Boerassic Park, Dekaffirnated and Foreign Aids have been presented in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Holland, USA and Canada.
